His output was very small and fewer than forty paintings are accepted as being by him. He was admitted to the Delft Guild in 1653, and appears to have been influenced by Carel Fabritius, one of Rembrandt 's most gifted pupils. His early works attest to the mark of the ÒlightÓ Caravaggiesque painters of the Utrecht School. Apart from two views of urban life, he specialised in interior scenes, rejecting all anecdotal elements. He set his -- usually female -- figures in exceptionally calm and peaceful, rigorously constructed, canvasses with strong contrasts but predominant, clear colours.
